This is the creation of a centre for environmental law, governance and policy under the faculty of law that will develop the interest and participation of the academicians in environmental protection and conservation.
Since 2006 a group of lecturers from the Faculty of Law in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) formed a special interest group in environmental law. This small group of lecturers get together to start their interest in environmental legal issues by doing research and presenting papers at conferences. The first conference that started the ball rolling was the 2nd Southeast Asian Natural Resources and Environmental Management Conference 2006 (SANREM 2006) ‘Sustainable Development Towards Better Quality of Life’ 21 – 23 November 2006 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Two papers were presented i.e. i) ‘Landfills Management System: An overview in Selangor’ by Siti Hafsyah Idris, Azni Mohd Dian and Norha Abu Hanifah ii) ‘Hill Slope Development and the Law in Selangor’ by Siti Sarah Sulaiman, Rasyikah Md Khalid and Norha Abu Hanifah.
In 2008, the Dean appointed Norha Abu Hanifah to head the Committee for Environmental Law at the faculty. The special interest group thus, decided to name their group the ‘Environment, Health and Safety Research Unit’ (EHSRU). The members also expanded. The next few years the group was low in activities because most of the members were doing their doctoral degrees in environmental legal issues.
In 2016, the group decided that now it is ready to be active again in research, writing of papers and other environment related activities. Thus, with encouragement from the Dean, the group decided to form a centre and for a start this centre will be under the faculty of law. They named the centre as ‘CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL LAW, GOVERNANCE AND POLICY’ (CELGoP).
In 2017, the centre was registered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature Academy for Environmental Law. (IUCNAEL). As of today, the members of CELGoP consists of not only lecturers from faculty of law, UiTM but also from other faculties and universities.
